View 5.1 environment. Any attempt to recompose desktops in a particular dedicated assignment linked clone pool results in the following:
1. An error is displayed in the Vsphere client says "Reconfigure virtual machine" twice and those two are listed as completed.
Then "Reconfigure virtual machine" occurs again but this fails with "Invalid configuration for device 0"
View administrator shows an error with the following"
Oct 17, 2014 4:58:12 PM EDT: View Composer Fault: Unexpected VC fault from View Composer (InvalidDeviceSpec) - Unknown - <fault xsi:type="InvalidDeviceSpec" xmlns="urn:internalvim25" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance">
<property>deviceChange[0].device.backing.parent.fileName</property>
<deviceIndex>0</deviceIndex>
</fault>
2. VM is immediately powered on. It sits complaining about no operating system being found. Not surprising because its OS disk has already been deleted.
User persistent disk is still there as are the other disks.
3. After 15 minutes elapse, the VM is power cycled by Vcenter with the same result. This repeats forever unless there is no user assigned to the vm and no persistent disk attached to it.
If that is the case then 4. below happens
4. Vcenter/Composer deletes the VM and provisions a new one. Maybe with the same machine name, maybe not.
The base VM does not have an iso connected to the CD. This has happened with multiple snaphots (including after deleting all snapshots) so snapshot corruption would not seem to be at issue.
As best I can determine the hardware configuration of the base image matches that of the linked clones. I am kind of at a loss as to what the possible cause could be.
If anyone has any ideas I am all ears.
Composer log says the following which doesn't seem to be any more informative
