Hi there,
We are running solidworks 2014 on a VMware view 5.3 environment but I’m having issues with the cpu speed.
With some functions which use the cpu for calculations (not the gpu) the speed is about 50% slower then a comparable physical machine.
For example when we have a fairly simple model and try to modify a sketch it takes significant more time in comparison to a physical workstation.
I timed the time it takes to modify a sketch with solidworks:
I have turned hypertreading off because when it is on it is even worse. (I've read somewhere that solidworks does not like to use hyperthreading)
2 cores: 01.03 min
4 cores: 01.30 min (i don't understand why it is not faster with 4 cores)
12 cores: 55 sec
24 cores: 51 sec
On a physical machine with 24 cores exact the same calculation takes 30 seconds.
I wonder what your vdi configurations are and if someone compared solidworks cpu calculations with a physical machine?
What are your experiences with the cpu performance on vdi's?
We are running the following configuration:
Host:
Dell R720
Grid k2
160 GB memory
2 E5-2695 xeon cpu's (24 cores)
vsphere 5.5
vmware view 5.3
VDI:
Windows 7 64 bit
4 gb memory (solidworks only uses 2 gb max in our case)
vdga / also tested vsga
different core configurations but 2 cores gives most acceptable configuration.
The physical workstation:
windows 7 64 bit
8 gb momory
2 xeon cpu's with 24 cores
nvidia quadro gpu
Thanks cheers
