Our View environment was installed back in the View 4.0 days and I didn't take over management of the system until about a year into the project (around the time of View 4.6) and the initial install and setup was done by a consultant. Since then I've updated the system as new versions of View have come out (usually 3-6 months behind initial relase) and we're now on View 5.1.2 and ESXi 5.0U2.
All of our connection, vCenter, and management servers (including the SQL database server) for the environment are now running Server 2008R2. However they are currently setup using the E1000 network adapter, while I've switched all my VDI images to using the VMXNET 3 adapter because somewhere along the line I read a PCoIP best practice that VMXNET 3 was the correct adapter to use with a Windows 7 image for VDI use. However, I really haven't found anything definitive about a best practice for the servers, other than some VMware reference architectures from Dell and some other vendors that sometimes mention in the specs that the management servers were setup using VMXNET 3.
So:
Should I switch my connection, security, vSphere (and so on) servers over to a VMXNET 3 network adapter? Is there a positive aspect to doing so? Or should the E1000 adapter be just fine for that use? Any negatives that might crop up?
Also, if you can point me to a document that states "this is what you should use and here's why" it would be appreciated, because apparently I'm not looking in the right places.....
