I work in a medical clinic that has an electronic medical record. Doctors need to dictate into their computers with a mic and front desk users need to use usb card scanners. I been working on a VDI solution and have evaluated VDM and Citrix Desktop Server for connection brokers. I like VDM because it is simple to install and manage but it has some limitations. Citrix Desktop is pretty complex if you aren't familiar with it (which I'm not to familiar). Here are the issues I am having:
With VDM, users need to be local administrators on the host and the guest for USB redirection to work. Our organization does not allow this so will VMware be changing this or is there a work around?
With VDM, bidirectional audio isn't support because VDM uses RDP for its connection. I know to fix this issue is bigger than what it seems because RDP would have to change but is there a work around that will allow me to use VDM. I have been told Citrix can do this but I found this in the Admin Guide for Citrix Desktop server:
Presentation Server Features Unavailable for
Workstation Desktops
The following features are available to clients connecting to server desktops
through an ICA connection, but not to workstation desktops, because workstation
desktops always use an RDP connection during user access:
• Smart card support
• SpeedScreen Multimedia Acceleration
• SpeedScreen Browser Acceleration
• SpeedScreen Flash Acceleration
• Microsoft ActiveSync support on Pocket PCs
• Bidirectional audio device support
• TWAIN redirection support
• Universal Printer Driver
So bidirectional audio to workstations really doesn't work with Citrix Desktop Server. Any other suggestions???
